Between the Flags - 100 years of Surf Lifesaving in Australia
Bundall
Surf life saving is an integral part of the history of our city and our continued enjoyment of the Gold Coast's beautiful beaches is made possible through the work of volunteer surf life saving clubs.
This special exhibition celebrates the centenary of surf lifesaving in Australia, and provides an insight into the community of dedicated surf lifesavers whose bravery has helped save over 500,000 lives in the past 100 years.
Developed by the National Museum of Australia in collaboration with Surf Life Saving Australia, this major touring exhibition looks at the history of surf lifesaving, the lifesaver as an Australian icon, beach culture and stories of the people who patrol our beaches.
The show includes surfing paraphernalia, costumes, photographs and paintings as well as historical and contemporary film footage and visitors have the opportunity to share their surf lifesaving stories as well as touch some of the material on display.
The exhibition will be accompanied by works from Gold Coast City Art Gallery's own collection of surf related artworks.
The exhibition is supported by Visions of Australia, Australian Government Program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the Development and touring of cultural material across Australia.
In conjunction with this exhibition, a free Public event will be held called "Between the Flags Stories" which will include presentations from guest speakers from the past 30 years of the local surf community. Gold Coast City Council has a major administrative centre and corporate offices are situated in a cluster. Evandale Sculpture Walk near Gold Coast Art Centre gets you outside and art loving. The Historic Museum is open on the first Sunday of the month March to November at Elliott Street.
